How to use Anapen®

In the event of anaphylaxis, it is essential you know how to use your Anapen® autoinjector correctly.

On this page you’ll find a range of learning tools to help you use Anapen® with confidence.

Remember to always have your Anapen® autoinjectors with you and your phone on hand.

Administer Anapen® in 4 steps:

Remove the black needle shield by pulling in the direction of the arrow.

When the black needle shield is removed, a small internal grey needle shield will fall out. This is supposed to happen.

Remove the grey safety cap from the red firing button.

Position the needle end of the ANAPEN® autoinjector against the outer part of the thigh.

ANAPEN® can be used through light clothing, such as denim, cotton or polyester.

Press the red firing button so that it clicks.

Hold the ANAPEN® autoinjector against the outer thigh for 3 seconds before removing.

After using Anapen®

Check the adrenaline has fired

The injection indicator will show red if the injection was completed successfully. If it isn’t red, repeat the steps with a new Anapen®.

Recap the device

Use the wide end of the black needle shield to cover the small needle.

Practice using Anapen® with the Anapen® Trainer

Before using Anapen® for the first time, it is important you know how to use the device correctly.

Anapen® Training Devices (trainers) allow you to physically practice the 4 steps but do not have a needle and do not contain adrenaline.

Anapen® trainers can be used repeatedly but will tire with time and excessive/incorrect use.
